I had an MRI on Monday and the results were good. The cancer is contained and is a slow growing tumor. The size is a little over a centimeter. It is in stage 1 which is great news. I met with a breast surgeon today. My dad went with me so we can save Andy's time off for when I have surgery and treatment. The doctor presented two options. The first was to have a lumpectomy followed by chemo and radiation. The second option was a mastectomy with reconstruction. Considering that I had not one risk factor for breast cancer and still have it, we have decided to go with a double mastectomy and reconstruction. I want to be finished with this and do not want the fear of it returning lingering over me for the rest of my life so this is the best option for me. I want to ensure (not that anything in life is guaranteed) that I will be around for my babies. This way I will never need another mammogram. I might have to do a short round of chemo depending on the final pathology results which will result in a fabulous summer bald head! I was VERY impressed with the surgeon and we could not have been in more agreement on the path to take. I asked him if I was his daughter what would he suggest and he said exactly what I had decided. I also feel very confident in my decision since my aunt and good friend (both doctors) also said that they would do the same thing if they were in my position. I will also get small perky breasts - woo hooo!! I also plan to have the genetic screening test done so I can see if I carry the breast cancer gene. This will help to determine if I will need to have my ovaries removed at some point as well. I also want to see if Tennasyn and my sister need to be more aware and possibly tested as well. Overall, today was a great day and we are now just waiting to meet with the plastic surgeon and set a date for the first surgery. We will let you know when the surgery is scheduled for as soon as we know. I cannot thank you enough for the visits (Satchel), goodie bag (Summer), cards and all the good thoughts and countless prayers that have been sent our way. I know that they have made a world of difference and cannot tell you how grateful we all are! Please continue to pray that the surgeries and reconstruction go well and that we will be back to "normal" in no time!
